However, this time, the Trump administration's reactions to American protesters gave 'teeth' to the Chinese government's propaganda," says Diana Fu, a professor at the University of Toronto who studies Chinese propaganda. "To a domestic audience that already is deeply suspicious of foreign interference, this is a highly effective strategy of winning popular support for cracking down on Hong Kong protesters."
