"China's blaming of domestic unrest on the 'black hand' of foreign forces is by no means new. However, this time, the Trump administration's reactions to American protesters gave 'teeth' to the Chinese government's propaganda," says Diana Fu, a professor at the University of Toronto who studies Chinese propaganda. "To a domestic audience that already is deeply suspicious of foreign interference, this is a highly effective strategy of winning popular support for cracking down on Hong Kong protesters."
